MindChamps Allied Care Creates Social Awareness for Children with Developmental Delays

MindChamps Allied Care working closely with teachers and families to support a child’s development

Singapore, 6 February 2017 - Figures from the Ministry of Family and Social Development (MSF) show that the number of educators providing learning support to students have increased by three-fold since 2013, thus allowing children with mild developmental needs to seek help. More specialists are working in preschools to help teachers identify developmental delays or needs in children.

MSF stresses the importance of these children benefitting from a mainstream and inclusive learning environment. With early intervention, the child will develop the competencies he or she requires for Primary One.

In most situations, it is beyond a parent’s ability to treat or even detect a child’s developmental delays or needs. MindChamps Allied Care will be organising a series of dedicated events which promote the close working relationship between therapists, teachers and families to support a child’s development.

Early detection is key, for it is the foundation on which therapy can be built upon.

Supporting the capacity of a child to meet the expectations of their school context

School is a context in which children learn how to be strategic learners, treasured friends,  valued community members, creative performers and efficient workers. Being a school student comprises many roles that can be appreciated or challenged by the academic and social expectations of teachers and classmates. In the 21st century, students need to be discerning in an information-saturated world, rather than reciters of facts.

For some students, the classroom can be ‘hard work’ and the playground can be a lonely or unhappy place because of executive functioning difficulties. Hence, using an occupational therapy perspective, our Guest Speaker Dr Susan Lowe’s talk will outline executive functioning abilities that support readiness for learning, presenting a strategic approach to promote student’s engagement in learning across academic and social domains.

The talk will also focus on the importance of strong partnerships between teachers, parents and allied health professionals and provide opportunities to explore the following:

  • How can we identify the strengths and difficulties of a student’s executive functioning abilities during performance in the context of their everyday school activities?

  • What are some effective cognitive strategies which can support a student’s increased engagement in learning within academic domains at school and social domains at home?

  • How can teachers, parents and allied health professionals collaborate in a meaningful and relevant way?

About MindChamps Holdings

MindChamps was first launched as an educational research centre in Sydney. The philosophy of the Founder, Chairman and Group CEO of MindChamps, David Chiem, was, and still is, to seek out the gaps that exist in society.

The first gap he identified was in education, while the second major gap that David identified was in health. Specifically, he focused on the mindset that the only time we go to the doctor is when the problem has already risen. In addition to treating conditions, David has always believed that doctors, like teachers, should play a critical role in ‘educating’ society in matters relating to health – nurturing them from young, the mindset that our approach to health should be preventive rather than reactive. MindChamps Medical, a division of MindChamps Holdings, draws together the benefits of education and healthcare to enable families to better understand how to build a healthy overall lifestyle.

The third element that completes the Trinity of the MindChamps vision is its focus on the Arts, the mirror to society.

The MindChamps Trinity of Mind (Education), Body (Medical) and Spirit (Arts) encapsulates the overall vision of MindChamps:

“To foster the power and potential of the human mind, body and spirit for a better tomorrow.”

It Changed My Life: An ex-refugee finds his way up with a champion mindset

David Chiem, founder of MindChamps, has shone in many roles after escaping with his family from Vietnam, including as actor and author

Mr David Chiem, 47, understands this only too well. His family experienced an incredible episode nearly 40 years ago, one which could have radically altered the course of their destinies. He may well not have been what he is today: the founder of MindChamps PreSchool, a trail-blazing pre-school operator with 33 outlets in Singapore.

Rise in popularity of Asian Brands (ST, 13 Nov 2016)

[caption id="attachment_12099" align="alignnone" width="650"]Straits Times coverage on Influential Brands Awards The Influential Brands Awards showcases popular top brands in Asia.[/caption]

Gen Y consumers surveyed are loyal to their local and national brands.

The voice of Asia’s Gen Y is loud and clear at this year’s Influential Brands Awards. To identify the popular top brands in Asia, more than 6,000 Gen Y consumers aged 21 to 31 were surveyed.

“It has emerged that 39 brands are commonly loved by most of Asia’s Gen Y,” says Amy Lim, director at Influential Brands, a think-tank, research and brand recognition platform set up to recognise brand excellence and promote brand thought leadership in Asia.

This year’s consumer and market research is derived from more than 50 top brands, and is based on their branding qualities, influence and impact on consumers.

Centred on Asia’s Gen Y, the research covered five countries – Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and China – and spans more than 50 categories ranging from online marketplace, food and beverage (F&B) and fast-moving consumer goods to electronics, beauty and wellness. Face-to-face and online surveys were conducted in the first quarter of the year.

Ms Lim says: “Of the 39 top-of-mind brands, 14 are Asian-originated brands, which makes up a healthy 36 per cent. This reflects the trend of not just the rise of Asia-originated brands, but their strengths and significance too, especially since Asian companies have always been considered relative latecomers to brand-building.”

Across the surveyed countries, BreadTalk, Uniqlo, Watsons, AirAsia and Samsung are some of the prominent Asian brands with high recall, says Ms Lim.

Ms Joyce Koh, group senior vice-president, brand development at BreadTalk Group, says: “We are delighted to know that Asia’s Gen Y has named BreadTalk as Top Bakery brand in Asia. Having started as Singapore’s home-grown bakery 16 years ago, and operating in Asia across 17 territories today, we truly appreciate our customers’ support and will continue to listen to their desire for creative and great tasting products.”

Clear loyalties

The survey also found that Asia’s Gen Y have clear loyalty towards their national and local brands. For example, in terms of airlines, Asia’s Gen Y preferred their own national carriers.

For beverages, gen Y consumers’ preferences differ across the five countries. For example, Gen Y consumers in Malaysia and Indonesia almost always prefer the carbonated options, while Gen Y consumers in Singapore prefer non-carbonated varieties, and in particular tea-based beverages.

Interestingly, the survey found that online shopping is still fragmented across most categories.

For example, in Singapore, 86 per cent of Gen Y consumers shop for fashion and accessories online in Malaysia, and in Indonesia, it is 76 and 74 respectively, while in Thailand it is only 48 per cent.

New Award categories

Two new categories – Outstanding Brands and 2016 CEP Brand Leader of the Year – will debut at this year’s Influential Brands Awards.

Outstanding Brands aims to identify, feature and celebrate companies that have shown resilience and growth in changing times. Ms Lim says that to be brand must be noteworthy in its own category, industry or domain; it must show significant high single-digit growth in revenue year-on-year, for at least the last two years; and have a clear business expansion plan.

“We are glad to note that in the face of a fast-changing economy, many strong, steadfast brands have shown outstanding performance. These results are not achieved by chance. They are, in fact, often efforts borne out of a focussed desire to excel, to be better than the rest.

“In particular, we are delighted with the achievements and display of growth of Harry’s International; a well-placed and popular brand in the category of Bar and Dining that has continued to grow its market footprint; ViewQwest, a dynamic provider of Internet Services; and Lush Asthetics, a leading provider of fat-freezing and cosmetic LED teeth whitening in Singapore,” she says.

The inaugural 2016 CEO Brand Leader of the Year award is given to six business leaders who have shown strong business leadership and have fully embraced branding as part of their business strategy.

They are Mr Alain Ong, chief executive officer Pokka International; Mr Anthony Tan, co-founder and chief executive officer of Grab Taxi Holdings; Dr Michael Tan, co-founder and group chief executive officer of Fullerton Healthcare Corporation; Mr Richard Eu, chief executive officer of Eu Yan Sang International; Mr George Quek, chairman of BreadTalk Group; and Mr David Chiem, founder, chief executive officer and chairman of MindChamps Holdings.

The recipients were selected based on five criteria; brand leadership, brand expansion, financial performance, innovation and personal integrity.

MindChamps PreSchool @ Punggol Northshore - Community Minded

MindChamps achieved yet another milestone with the Grand Opening of MindChamps PreSchool @ Punggol Northshore.

At the opening were Guests of Honour Dr Janil Puthucheary (Minister of State, Ministry of Communications and Information and Ministry of Education, and MP of Punggol Coast; and Mrs Carmee Lim, Mentor Principal and Member of the World Advisory Board at MindChamps Holdings.

Located within Marina Country Club, Punggol Northshore is the largest MindChamps PreSchool to date, spanning 15,000 sqft across spacious classrooms and outstanding facilities catering to 140 students.

The MindChamps PreSchool brand is synonymous with cutting edge curriculum based on a 2036 model of education, a model which addresses the question of what will the world of 2036 look like for the children of today and how can we prepare them for that world?  As the Founder, Chairman and CEO of MindChamps David Chiem commented:

"It has been said that it takes a village to raise a child,  and this is important as I believe a pre-school setting can provide a child with their first contact with the wider community, offering insights beyond the learning environment.
If we couple this experience, with our 2036 model of education and bring this to the children of Punggol, we give them the opportunity to experience MindChamps’ unique research-based curriculum, while developing the foundations of Champion Mindset. This has to be a great way for our Young Champ's to begin life's journey.”

MindChamps Punggol Centre Manager Ms Joyce Chen in her opening remarks thanked all the Champion pioneer parents for their support and encouragement and offered that with their support they are building a 'happy united community' where teachers enjoy their teaching, Champs enjoy their learning and parents enjoy their parenthood.'

Dr Janil, praised MindChamps for coming to Punggol and for providing a valuable service to the residents who have been looking forward to this PreSchool for some time. Dr Janil echoed the sentiments of Ms Joyce as he went on to say that for children coming to a PreSchool, is the first step towards becoming a part of a community.

To further support community awareness, it was announced by Dr Janil that a new community centre, Punggol Vista Community Centre will be built with a large library and have a focus on early childhood books and resources.

To help raise funds for the new Community Centre, MindChamps students at Punggol will be donating a series of small tiles painted by the students and their parents to be on permanent display at the new Community Centre.

Ms Chen went on to say; "At any MindChamps Preschool, we are combining learning experiences and structured play in a fun, safe and nurturing environment. We are preparing our Young Champs for their future and we believe that a sense of community plays an important role in the development of their feelings of belonging and security."

Gold for Breakfast

Yip Pin Xiu first made headlines by winning the gold medal at the women’s 50m backstroke in the 2008 Beijing Paralympics. Now, at the Rio Paralympics, she is making headlines everywhere, making it to ‘breaking news’ for dailies, radio, television and more.

Pin Xiu clinches not one but two gold medals at the Paralympics, clocking 2 min 7.09 seconds for the 100m backstroke (S2 class) event and 1 min 00.33 seconds for the 50m backstroke (S2 class) event. Needless to say, new world records have been set.

While she is Singapore’s first and only Paralympics gold medallist, now, with three golds (one from the Beijing Paralympics 2008) and four medals, she is in the league of one of Asia’s most accomplished Paralympic swimmers.

At the 8th ASEAN Para Games held in Singapore in 2015, Pin Xiu achieved an outstanding sporting feat by shattering the women’s 50m backstroke (S2 Class) world Paralympic record with a time of 1min 01.61 seconds and winning the gold medal in this event. Her swim erased the previous world record time of 1 min 03.00 seconds set by China’s Feng Ya Zhu at the 2012 Paralympics held in London.

Pin Xiu’s sporting feat earned her The Straits Times Athlete of the Year for 2015, a prestigious award that recognises Singapore athletes who achieved exceptional success and, more importantly, who go on to become inspirational role models in the manner that they achieve success.

More amazingly, Pin Xiu has achieved sporting success despite her deteriorating physical condition. She has been afflicted with muscular dystrophy, a syndrome that slowly breaks down her muscles as she grows older. It was for this reason, along with her sheer determination and tenacity to do well despite her physical condition and the inspiring nature of her accomplishment, that distinguished her from other able-bodied athletes who were also nominated for the award. In fact, Pin Xiu had won seven out of 13 votes from a 13-member award judging panel and is only the second para-athlete to win the award since its inception in 2009.

Pin Xiu was also accorded The Straits Times Star of the Month (for December 2015), an award which recognises well-deserving athletes – on a monthly basis – for their sporting achievements and was a nominee of The Straits Times Singaporean of the Year for 2015, an award which recognises Singaporeans whose extraordinary acts of goodwill, ingenuity or perseverance improved their community and the lives of others during the year. Both of these achievements were a result of her achievement at the 8th ASEAN Para Games.

Importantly, Pin Xiu believes in overcoming her physical challenges and achieving success by adopting a Champion Mindset, which is a personal attribute that is about being the best one can be, discovering one’s strengths, recognising one’s weaknesses and turning them into strengths.

“I identify strongly with the MindChamps philosophy of nurturing the Champion Mindset in every individual. It is the Champion Mindset that has helped me overcome my physical challenges to achieve my dream of an Olympic Gold Medal [at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics],” she says.

Congratulations Pin Xiu, you are certainly our Champion. Once again, you have re-written the history books.

MindChamps Ambassador Yip Pin Xiu in Rio for her third Paralympics

MindChamps brand ambassador and national Paralympic swimmer is currently in Rio, Brazil, representing Singapore for her third Paralympics. Yip Pin Xiu first made headlines by winning the gold medal at the women’s 50m backstroke in the 2008 Beijing Paralympics.

It was this achievement that made her Singapore’s first and only Paralympics gold medallist, a distinction that is still held by her today. Moreover, Pin Xiu is a recipient of other prestigious awards and accolades including the Meritorious Service Medal BBM in 2008 and the Junior Chamber International’s 10 Outstanding Young Persons of the World award in 2011. She was also inducted in the Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame in 2014.

Earlier this year, Pin Xiu smashed another world record at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) European Open Championships in Funchal, Portugal in May. With a time of 2 min 9.79 seconds, Pin Xiu garnered gold in the 100m backstroke (S2 class). Perseverance ensued and two days later, she broke her own record of 1 min 01.61 seconds in the women's 50m backstroke (S2 class) with a new time of 1 min 01.39 seconds.

Poised with a Champion Mindset to be the best she can be at the 2016 Rio Paralympics to be held in early September this year, Pin Xiu may once re-write the history books with yet another story.

It is the story of a journey against all odds.
